Act in Benin:
for an equitable, protective school
Our mission in Benin
In Benin, school inequalities, educational violence and obstacles to girls’ enrolment remain major challenges. They underline the importance of strengthening educational practices and supporting communities to promote the success of all children.
Graines de Paix is working to bring about lasting change in education in Benin. We train teachers, parents and community leaders to adopt collaborative, interactive and experiential teaching practices based on respect, cooperation and equality. We equip them to exercise firm, non-violent authority that builds self-esteem and empowers students.
We work closely with national authorities and local players to ensure that changes are implemented sustainably and taken on board locally.
The aim: to make school an inclusive and motivating place, where every child, girl or boy, can learn in peace and develop his or her full potential.
Our educational programs – Graines de Paix
Two complementary programs to build a peaceful education in Benin. Each addresses specific challenges while strengthening the quality of the education system as a whole.
Learning in Peace, Educating without Violence
This national program supports primary school teachers in adopting non-violent, participative and inclusive practices. It aims to prevent educational violence, reinforce the quality of fundamental learning and create classrooms where every child learns with dignity and respect.
The program is based on pedagogical tools adapted to the field and on local support. At the same time, it mobilizes parents and community relays to reinforce the coherence between school and home and anchor changes in the long term.
Best School for Girls
A national program that boosts girls’ enrolment and success by acting on the whole of their educational environment. It supports teachers in adopting equitable and rewarding teaching practices that encourage girls’ participation and support their fundamental learning.
The program also mobilizes parents, school principals and communities to remove social and cultural barriers to girls’ access, attendance and success at school. This integrated action helps to reduce school dropouts and create environments where every girl can learn, assert herself and continue her education.
Each program is designed to be rolled out progressively in different regions of the country, in line with national educational priorities and local realities.
Concrete action in the field
Our programs are based on structured actions in the field, designed in conjunction with national authorities and local communities:
- Community workshops with local leaders to raise awareness of children’s rights, gender equality and alternatives to educational violence.
- School-parent dialogues to strengthen coeducation, improve the school climate and encourage girls’ enrolment.
- Targeted training for teachers on inclusive teaching, classroom management and prevention of extremism.
- Screenings and debates, particularly around film projects, to open up dialogue on educational violence and change perceptions.
