Activities

Education for a culture of peace, the cornerstone of our activities, has the dual objective of providing the means for delivering quality education, and for building a sustainable culture of peace, both in daily life and in the wider world.

It enables teachers to teach better, students to learn better, and communities to understand each other better.

There can be no sustainable reduction in violence without cultural change. Striving for a culture of peace in our own lives, and extending it to our societies, provides the foundation. But this is not enough: the key is to design and produce resources and training, to equip teachers and everyone involved in teaching and motivating children to interact peacefully.

This is why education for a culture of peace is the method recommended in Target 4.7 of the Sustainable Development Goals, for delivering quality education, encompassing education in citizenship and sustainable development.

What is quality education?

Everyone dreams of quality education: parents for their children, teachers for their students, leaders for future generations, and companies for their future staff.

We all hope that every student will be successful in their education, be driven by human values, know how to prevent violence and replace it with dialogue, and become a citizen who proactively supports sustainable development, a harmonious society and a better world. That is quality education.

Where this website refers to peace education, it means education for a culture of peace: education in values, attitudes and human skills which encourage success and fulfilment in the classroom, raise environmental awareness, prevent violence and radicalisation, and foster harmony in society. Education for a culture of peace is the practical means for implementing quality education.

Quality education based on education for a culture of peace uses a constructive and sensitive approach to authority and positive discipline. It promotes intercultural skills, global citizenship, and the three dimensions of sustainable development. It helps both the teacher and the student to develop.

Research & Development

Graines de Paix’s Research & Development work brings together the latest in both quality education developments and culture of peace education methods for improving young student’s school success, reinforcing their personal development, preventing violence and promoting proactive peace behaviours.

We are one of the few to combine these two formerly separate domains into one systemic approach, thus providing innovative solutions for teachers, students and all concerned.

Teaching resources

For the most part, our teaching resources are still in French. These include :

  • the "Growing up in peace" Collection:
4 volumes for primary school teachers and their students, respectively of 4-6, 6-8, 8-10 and 10-12 years. They have been validated by major Swiss authorities including Education 21 and been tested by schools. An external impact study over a full school year has just been finished, confirming the positive effects of the experiential teaching methods, psychosocial skills and activity contents proposed. Translations are planned for English and Arabic to begin with.

  • the Neither Hedgehog, nor doormat travelling exhibition for schools
This resource is also in French and we hope to translate it into English.
Its objective is to develop awareness and skills for avoiding either provoking or standing by violence. It is a joint development with CENAC, a non-violence NGO in Lausanne.
