Biography

Kofi Annan made many significant changes to the UN, highlighting the need to address issues such as AIDS and advocating international support for peace and prosperity in Africa.

During his career he has been involved in countless diplomatic initiatives, for example in 1999 the resolution of the stalemate between Libya and the Security Council and the international response to violence in East Timor. During his time at the UN, Annan urged towards a philosophy of intervention, seeing this as the key to moving towards international peace.

At the end of 2006 Annan’s second term ended, however he has continued his work to strive for international peace; in 2008 he took part in the negotiations to end the civil unrest in Kenya. Annan has been honored by many organizations across the globe in the form of awards and honorary degrees.
