EISENHOWER Dwight D.

EISENHOWER Dwight D.

llustrious American general, renowned in particular for organizing the landing of American forces in support of the Allies during World War 2, while becoming fiercely opposed to all wars.

American
1890 -  1969

Biography

Dwight D. Eisenhower went on to become President of the United States from 1953 to 1961, at the request of the Republican Party, while passing far-reaching social acts, notably in favor of equal rights for all Americans, including African-Americans (Civil Rights Act, 1957).

He was a president of strong values, inspired by his parents' religious values for peace. His military career had taken him to many fronts, so he was intimately convinced that war was unacceptable. Thus, during war and as President, he worked for peace through dialogue, whether with General de Gaulle (during and after the 2nd World War) or President Nikita Khrushchev (ending the Korean War as soon as he was elected President).

Every expenditure on weapons is theft

Every gun that is made, every warship launched, every rocket fired signifies, in the final sense, a theft from those who hunger and are not fed, those who are cold and are not clothed."

Mankind's tragic folly

War is mankind's most tragic and stupid folly; to seek or advise its deliberate provocation is a black crime against all men."

No such thing as preventive war

In my opinion, there is no such thing as a preventive war. Although this suggestion is repeatedly made, none has yet explained how war prevents war. Worse than this, no one has been able to explain away the fact that war creates the conditions that beget war."

Stepping aside to enable peace

I like to believe that people, in the long run, are going to do more to promote peace than our governments. Indeed, I think that people want peace so much that one of these days governments had better get out of the way and let them have it."

The value of teachers

Teachers need our active support and encouragement. They are doing one of the most necessary and exacting jobs in the land. They are developing our most precious national resource: our children, our future citizens."

War as felt by a General

I hate war as only a soldier who has lived it can, only as one who has seen its brutality, its futility, its stupidity."
