Educating low-income minority children

First, teach them to believe in themselves".

  • Source : Quoted by John Gardner in On Leadership, The Free Press, NY, 1990, p 194
  • Publication date : circa 1965-66
  • Commentary :

    J. Gardner was at a conference with Martin Luther King. Regarding low-income, minority children, a speaker advised “First, teach them to read.” Gardner indicates that MLK whispered, "Teach them to believe in themselves."

We quote this as it corresponds to Graines de Paix's pedagogy, which focuses on developing the feelings of self-worth in young students as the foundation for learning motivation and progress, self-realisation and preventing certain forms of violence.
